Genesis vs theogony. What are the main differences between Genesis 1 and Theogony? The theogony was a poem written by Hesiod. Hesiod was a Greek poet and sometimes is called “father of Greek  didactic poetry.” Genesis is the first book in the Bible. Genesis one is about the creation of man ad the world. This paper is about the differences between the two.

In the poem the theogony there are hundreds of gods with each their own power. It also says that gods make more gods. In the Bible there is only one God that has always been and always will be. God wasn’t created by anything like the gods in the theogony were.

In the theogony people started out as man only and no woman. Hesiod claims the man did something to displease the gods and so the gods gave them woman as a curse. Genesis says that God created one man in the beginning and he was lonely so God gave him woman as a blessing. Genesis 2: 20-23 says”20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” This is a big difference between Genesis and the theogony of why woman was made.

One more difference is that the two have huge different views on how the world was made. In the theogony Hesiod says he does not know how the world came to be, but that his words were coming from the Muses which were the daughters of Zeus. Genesis actually says how the world was made. On day one God created light. On day two God created firmament. On day three God created all forms of vegetation, which is plants. On day four God created the universe which is the planets, stars, and suns. On day five God created all flying things and everything that swims in the water. And on day six God created everything that walks on land and man. Finally on day Seven God rested. This is why there are seven days in a week.

Genesis vs theogony. What are the main differences between Genesis 1 and Theogony. These three paragraphs have answered that question. The theogony does not give a reference to how the world was made, it says woman is a curse, and that there are hundreds of gods. While the Bible says how the world was made, that woman is a blessing to man and that there is only one true God.
